Free Text to Speech Chrome Extension
Speechise is a text to speech Chrome extension that reads web pages, PDFs and pasted text aloud in natural AI voices. Click the icon, press “Read this page” and listen in the side panel while you keep browsing.
Free to use: up to 500 characters per request, no account needed. Requires Chrome 151 or later.
How to make Chrome read a page aloud
- Install the extension — Click “Add to Chrome” on this page and confirm in the Chrome Web Store. Pin the Speechise icon to your toolbar so it's always one click away.
- Open a page and click the icon — Go to the article or PDF you want to hear and click the Speechise icon. The side panel opens next to the page.
- Press “Read this page” and listen — Speechise takes the main text of the page, detects its language and reads it aloud sentence by sentence. Pause, go back or skip ahead at any time.
Why listen with Speechise
Reads the article, not the menus
Speechise finds the main content of the page — the headline and the body text — and skips navigation, sidebars, ads and footers.
PDFs and pasted text too
Open a PDF in Chrome and press “Read this page” — no upload or conversion. Or paste an email, notes or any text into the side panel and press “Read this text”.
Follow along sentence by sentence
The sentence being read is highlighted in the side panel. Pause, resume or jump to the previous or next sentence whenever you need, and keep working in other tabs while you listen.
Natural voices in 20+ languages
40+ AI voices in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Japanese and more. Leave it on Detect Language or pick a voice yourself — the extension remembers your choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Speechise Chrome extension free?
Yes. You can install it and listen without paying or signing up. Free use is limited to 500 characters per request. For longer texts, a one-time character pack or Premium raises the limit — the Upgrade button in the side panel opens the pricing page.
Which browsers does it work in?
Speechise is available for Google Chrome (version 151 or later) in the Chrome Web Store. A Firefox version is coming soon. Other browsers aren't supported yet.
Can it read PDFs aloud?
Yes. Open the PDF in Chrome as usual, click the Speechise icon and press “Read this page” — the text is read aloud right in the browser, with no upload or conversion. The PDF needs to contain real text: scanned pages that are only images can't be read.
What can the extension see on the pages I visit?
Only the page you ask it to read. Speechise doesn't read pages in the background: it gets access to a tab only when you click “Read this page” and then takes the text of that page. The text you choose is sent to Speechise to be turned into speech. There are no ads and no tracking. Allowing access to all sites is optional: it only lets “Read this page” work on pages where the extension would otherwise ask for access.
Which languages can it read?
More than 20 languages with 40+ AI voices, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Speechise detects the language of the page automatically, or you can choose a language and voice yourself.
Do I need a Speechise account?
No. You can read pages aloud without signing in. If you have a paid plan, click Sign in in the side panel: the extension uses the same account as speechise.com and shows how many characters you have left.
Does it work offline?
No. The voices are generated in the cloud, so you need an internet connection while listening. To listen offline, convert your text on the Speechise website and download it as an MP3.
